Kansas City is stepping into the future with plans add solar panels and equipment to 80 city buildings.

The leased equipment will only be enough to supply 2.5 percent of each building¡¯s power demand, which is typical for the Midwest, The Kansas City Star reports. But after the costs of leasing the solar panels, the city will save $40,000 in the first year and possibly more afterward. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Kansas City is following Columbia¡¯s lead as a leader in the region in the use of solar energy. But it is important that Kansas City also invest in the green movement.

Residents will see solar units on community centers, the Aviation Department, and police and fire department buildings.

Perhaps soon, more homeowners and businesses also will put up solar panels to turn the sun¡¯s rays into electric power. The city is leading the way.
