In a recent survey by StrongArm Technologies, 47% of construction worker respondents said they currently are stressed on the job, according to constructiondive.com.

The two biggest causes of stress were difficulty recruiting new employees to help with day-to-day work and concerns regarding wages. Half of respondents said the industry is having a more difficult time recruiting new workers, and one in four workers were concerned they are not getting paid enough.

Additionally, about a third of workers said it is difficult to take time for vacation. Twelve percent said their job has negative effects on their mental health, and 11% said their job has negative effects on their physical health.

StrongArm Technologies’ report focused largely on its broader customer base—industrial workers in manufacturing, construction, and warehousing and transport. It highlighted three key “actionable insights” from a survey of 600 workers across those industries: the effects of workplace stress on home life; lack of on-the-job training; and the need to further prioritize worker safety.

About 20% of industrial workers reported they have felt resistance to change to make their profession more conducive to a work/life balance. Of the construction workers surveyed, 16% said their job is causing them to work too hard to engage easily with friends or family outside of work.

StrongArm Technologies CEO Sean Petterson said the company conducted the research in part because changes in work culture—such as an increase in remote work and flexible hours—have emerged for white collar jobs and workers, but workers in industries such as construction and manufacturing have not seen that shift as much.
