It is important for leaders to know how to nurture relationships and choose team members who have attributes that lead to success.

Inc. offers the following patterns that can derail success in leadership and professional relationships.

1.Relying only on  intellectual power. Although raw intellect can be important, emotional intelligence is needed in all relationships. Leaders and team members must be able to work with others, adapt, and take and effectively deliver feedback.

2.Wanting to avoid potential  disagreement. Having people who listen is important, but you want team members to be confident enough to stand up for their views even if it may cause  conflict. When you need innovative ideas or are handling complex issues, there may need to be disagreement to arrive at the right decision.

3.Being unable to recognize or handle workplace politics. Every office has politics. You need team members who know how to deal with each employee and can predict how he or she will respond to different situations. It is important to understand what motivates you and team members to gain success.

4.Not wanting to share credit for successes at work. Team members who believe success is all about “I” will never gain the trust needed to help the business succeed. Look out fo traits such as quiet smugness, condescension, lack of eye contact and  dismissive gestures.

5.Being unwilling to admit weaknesses. Some people try to hide their flaws by evading questions or pushing their own agenda rather than listening to others. Look for people who are  honest, authentic and not afraid to admit mistakes. Everyone has weaknesses, and leaders need people with complementary skills.
